Can I get a Witness?
« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 12:15 BST (UK) »
Any chance some of you clever peoples can tell me the name of the second witness here. I think the first name is Mary. Could it be Dunnings?

Thanks

I don't think it is Dunnings - not long enough and the first letter doesn't look like a D to me.

Is there any chance of a bit more of the document, for comparison purposes?

Jen :)

It looks like Mary VINNY to me - is it a west country marriage?

Edit: or maybe VINING

I like that too - there is what looks like a dotted i in there.

My guess would be:

VENNING

Good luck with your research!

The next thing to do would be to try to locate a suitable candidate on the census.

I can't see a Mary VINNY but some of the others existed.  What date is this?  Who are the happy couple?

;)

The dot on the i of William is offset to the right, which suggests that the i in the unknown surname is near enough to the start of the name as to rule out a double n coming before the i.

If you follow that, it rules out Dunnings, Venning, etc.

I follow your reasoning and agree. I still like Vinn(e)y best, I think. There are births registered for Mary Vinney but it would be good to have a date and place of marriage.
