Hi Hethmar

Your Boniface ancestors were still there in both the 41 and 51 census

1841 Census – Registration District of Westham
HO 107/ 1117/1 Folio 1 – 10, Pevensey, Sussex

BONIFACE William, 75, Ag Lab, born in Sussex
                Elizabeth, 70, born Sussex
                Reuben, 35, born Sussex
Stephen, 10, Male Servant, born Sussex
                Isabella, 10, born Sussex

Don’t forget that the above ages were rounded DOWN to the nearest 5

1851 Census
HO107/ 1637/ Folio 4/ Page 2 – Horseye, Westham
BONIFACE Rubin. Head, Unm, 47, Marshland Looker, born Pevensey
Elizabeth, Mother, Widow, 82, born Westham
Stephen, Nephew, Unm, 24, Ag Lab, born Chiddingly
Isabela, Neice, Unm, 23, House Keeper, born Pevensey

How brilliant  ;D

I am sitting here grinning.  Wonder where the kids came from both born same year and down as nephew and niece?

Great, will add this and I love the occupation descriptions too.

Thats wonderful Chris.  Wish I had someone like you in Norfolk!!

I have found Great Grandad Edward Horstead in 1868 in London having married an Emily Steers.  I then find him in all the census up to 1901 yet no sign of him at all before 1868 in London.  I asked for a look up for him in St George in the East and Wapping (these birthplaces alternate on his census records!).   But he nor his brother, Jonas appear anywhere.  (I have also found Jonas marrying in 1870 in London but no where else at all, not even on census records - maybe he emigrated, dont know).

However, an elderly relative tells me that the Horsteads came from Norfolk and yes, I have found an Edward Horstead, born right year (according to census age) in a village just 3 miles from where I live, but apart from his brith in parish records, nothing at all again this end!! It is maddening.

I have now sent off for his Marriage Cert, as I assume I will be able to see his fathers name and hopefully either tie in or discount the Horsteads in the Norfolk village.

Sorry, got off subject there, but it is driving me to dstraction that I cant find these two men.

Glad that you are feeling very pleased, its nice when it all comes together and turns names and dates into families.

Sorry, but they were not both born in the same year:
If you take the 1851 census age of 24 for Stephen, then he should have been 14 in 1841; rounded down would make him 10 as listed.
Likewise Isabella was 23 in 1851, making her 13 in 1841, but rounded down makes her 10 as listed.

If you find any more sussex ancestors; you know where to find me

Being only new to this game I have only now come across your posting. I'm hoping that you may be able to help me in some way, no matter how small.

I have a Henry Cheal who married Anne Streeter in Lewes in 1826 and am trying to verify if this is the Streeter line I am in search of and hopefully the correct Cheal line!
Would you have any information about this couple?

I would be grateful for any info at all. Many thanks.
Genie

Hi there genie520

Welcome to Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards
I hope that I can help you further your research into your Sussex Ancestors.

Can you give me any further info on your Cheale and Streeter Families?

I have spotted a Cheal Family, Cordwainer and Streeter Family, Cordwainer again on the 1831 census for St John Sub Castro, Lewes.

There are several cheale and streeter people in my databases of baptisms and burials

Any little bit of info could be important

Hello Chris,
Many thanks for the welcome.
Unfortunately I know very little about the Cheal family, but as far as I can gather he married an Anne Streeter at Lewes in 1826. (Whether or not this is my Anne Streeter is yet to be proven).

Anne Streeter was the daughter of Emmory Streater and Frances (Gillman); she was born c.1799 and baptised at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Dover. Her siblings were Frances, Catherine and William, all baptised at St. Mary's. William Streeter married Charlotte Pelham in Sussex in 1826; another elusive branch on the family tree! Other than that I have no other info.

I would be most grateful for any information on either family.

Many thanks,
Genie

Hi Genie,
This is the marriage.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Lewes All Saints, East Sussex,  Date: 24 Oct 1826:
Subject: Henry CHEALE
Spouse: Ann STREETER, botp (B)

Not a lot of helpful information there, but good to confirm.
I noted 387 Cheal marriages in Sussex from 1560-1841!  So plenty to choose from,
Jane

Hello Jane,

Thankyou for the confirmation of the marriage. It seems these folk are going to be my brick wall - amongst others!

Kind regards,
Genie :-\

Hi genie,  I havent been on this site for ages, I thought I would be notified if the thread was updated?

Anyway, thanks to the WONDERFUL Chris, you probably saw that I had done very well in tracing my Cheals/Verralls/Bonifaces.  In fact I am back to 1550 on the Bonifaces, Chris!

genie, have you checked out Genes Reunited website, over the last couple of months hundreds of Cheal(e)s have been added and it is likely you will pick up a connection.

Many thanks still to Chris who helped me at the very beginning.  By the way Chris, re my Horstead family - I did trace them back from Stepney to the village just literally down the road from me now.  In one fell swoop and a lot of register reading, I went back a further 3 generations.
