Hello again Lorraine,

many thanks for this.

Do you have info on Alfred Ayres Snr?

Ive found an 1851 census entry for an Alfred Ayres(mis-transcribed Aus):

Alfred Aus born 1806 Woody,Hampshire

Sarah born 1806 Gloucester

Rhoda born 1835 Petworth

Eliza born 1838 East Grinstead

Alice born 1839 Godalming

Emey born 1843 Swanley

Esther born 1845 Redhill

Elizabeth born 1841 Swanley.

Rhoda married a William Matthews in ticehurst sept quart 1867.

He was a general dealer/horse dealer born c1830 Hurst,Sussex.

Dont have anything on his family yet,but they seemed to lead a settled life, with children not pursuing traveller occs, nor marrying travellers.

On the 1851 this Alfred Ayres is stopping with a Henry Ayres(Aris) born 1808 N.

With him are a wife and 7 children.

Daughter Alice married Mark Parker.

Im thinking this Alfred and Henry are siblings.

Please do you know if this Alfred is Alfred Aires and Mary Willets father?

Many thanks,

Nel.

Hi Nel

The 1851 census Alfred Ayres, is another Alfred but still relevant.

His wife was Sarah White. The William Matthews Rhoda married was the son of Joseph Matthews (1809-1898) & Elizabeth unknown. They had 7 children - William, Phoebe, Job, Rhoda, Fanny, Thomas & Emily. Phoebe & Job married a brother and sister - Fredrick & Alice Courtnage. William married a Marion but don't surname. You are right, Joseph was my great grand father's brother, and they didn't travel, they were more into the scrap metal business (well they are now!  ;D ) my cousin knows a few of the descendants.

Henry Ayres was Alfreds brother, as well as Louisa & William (Sure there must be some more somewhere!)

Alice Ayres married Mark Parker as you said they had 7 children also - Matilda, John, Mark, Elizabeth, Leonard, Mary Ann & William. Mark was listed as a chimney Sweep in the census. The oldest child Matilda married Sampson Hoadley who is also connected to the Matthews, you should have them on your tree, if not let me know.

Phew that was a long post!! will let you know about Alfred Ayres Snr

Hello Lorraine,

sorry about the delay,im working on two different parts of my tree at the moment.

You say that this Alfred isnt his father, but hes relevant. Is that because hes connected through others,or is he a cousin or something?

I have Horace Hoadley marrying Amy Mathews, daughter of Walter and Vanslow.
Also,Alice Hoadley married her brother Job Mathews.

Ive also found a marriage in Wandsworth june quart 1917 between a Charles Matthews and Priscilla Smith which im curious about,as Walter/William Matthews had a son Charles born 1893 Surrey.
There is a Priscilla Smith on census, daughter of Thomas and Ruth.
Thomas was the son of Andrew Smith and Amy Parker.
Thomas had a sister Rebecca, who married Joseph James, son of John James and Louisa Aires.
Louisa Aires born 1839 East Grinstead.
Do you have this marriage?

I look forward to finding out about Mary Willets father Alfred, and how he fits in with the other Aires.

many thanks,

Nel

Hi nellwild
Im looking for info about my 2x g grandmother rebecca smith who married joseph james . I saw your post even though it was years ago saying that rebecca smith who married joseph james was the daughter of andrew smith and amy parker . We have been unsure about this for years as we have seen census records of andrew and amys daughter rebecca still travelling with them in 1901 and 1911 , also our rebecca with joseph james in those same years.
After seeing your post i was wondering whether you had any more  information which makes you sure these two rebeccas are the same person ?!
                  Thank you !! Rebecca James
