Stalag 383
« on: Friday 04 September 09 12:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace anyone who was in STALAG 383 with my father Cpl Reginald Henry Tanner (Bob Tanner). He died in 1957. I have a number of photos with him in a group with a  STALAG IXC stamp on the back, but I believe this could be STALAG 383. He was serving with the 2nd Gloucesters when captured near Dunkirk. My mother tells me one of his best mates was a chap called 'Zazoo Pitts' who lived in Bristol.

Hello Sixpence and welcome to Rootschat

Have you tried the Wartime Memories Project for Stalag 383 (http://www.wartimememories.co.uk/pow/stalag383.html)? It looks like you will have more luck tracing specific people on a dedicated site like that.

On Ancestry, I can only see a listing for a couple of chaps with the name Pitt (not Pitts) in the same camp, both with a first name beginning with F, but there are no further details

Hope this helps

Glen

thank you for the link. I think my father was originally put into Stalag 9C and he appears on photos 1511, 1512, 1513 & 1518 shown on the site. He was then moved I believe to Oflag 111c which changed names to Stalag 383, although I can see no photos of him on the site Robert (ramacal@aol.com) confirmed to me that from the infantry record held Exeter he was definatly in Stalag 383 with a prisoner number of 1950, army number 5181625. The only evidence I can see on the www.pegasusarchive.org site on Stalag 383 is a Bob Tanner 'Scribe' in the rover scout crew, but no photo of him.

As kizmiaz says there are only two with the surname Pitt listed for 383 in 1945. Bdr.F.W. & Sgt.F  Both were R.A.
It could be that the man was repatriated prior to the lists being compiled in April 1945.

Perhaps you could find you man through the P.O.W. Liberation Reports in WO344/254/1 at The National Archives. They do give Home Address.

My Uncle was Reginald William Spink (known as Bill) and was the radio operator in Stalag 383. As I only knew him in later life, I have no idea how he looked during the war (age 31 to 37 approx.) He may well be in the on-line photos, but I have no idea which one might be him.

Anyone who might be able to point him out, would be of great help! Thanks.
