Isobel,
I have done a little looking and cannot find town, city or village called Galt in Canada.  Would you know the province by any chance.  Also there was a predominant family called Galt, I believe he was the first Hight Commissioner to Canada from the U.K..
Ted
Surnames I am Interested in:
Dolan, Banks, Chambers, Bemi, Hills, Crowe

Hi Isobel,
Galt (now part of the city of Cambridge) is in the Province of Ontario, Waterloo County.  Here are a couple of website suggestions:

Ontario GenWeb for Waterloo County:

Ontario Vital Statistics Project:

You can find a transcription of the 1851 census for Galt at this site:

http://www.waterlooogs.ca/census.htm

There are no "Hoggs" listed but there are a couple "Hogg" from Scottland born in the 1820's.
