Unfortunately you have ancestors in the part of the county that I have very little information on except for the 1851 Census.

hi again, Chris,
looking for Cuthbert Baker on Eastourne 1861 census please being about 2 years old, he was born Jan. 01, 1859 at sea and his parents also died at sea at the same time (no proof but looking), so looking for proof of his birth, in 1881 census he says born Hastings then 1891  census he says Eastbourne?

John Cripps  was born May 08, 1828 and died on the March 1909 , on 1841 he was 13 born in Richmond (watermen family on thames) then by 1951 he was at stonefield road, st mary in the castle, was married to Anna Reeds April 18, 1851 in hastings, 1861 and 1871 i dont know, 1881 age 52 police sergent, 1891 i dont know, 1901 age 72 retired police sargeant so my question is trying to locate his police records, have you had a chance to see if this exists please, thanks

Sorry about the delay, but been away ancestor hunting in South Wales for a few days (wifes paternal ancestors and their living descendants)

Have checked the 1861 Census for Eastbourne for your Cuthbert Baker, and although there are 14 references to Baker Families; your Cuthbert is not amongst them.

I received your message re extra archives you have in your library.
I would most definately like a lookup for a Hastings Marriage 1837-1865
Mary CHAPMAN and Henry CHAPMAN should be about 1858-59.

Also a Hastings Baptism 1700-1877
Ann CHAPMAN c1859  daughter of the above.

This family could also be on the 1861 Eastbourne Census. Henry died within the next couple of years.
Mary CHAPMAN then married Moses DOWNER.

Ann Chapman's death certificate & her immigration records indicate she lived in Eastbourne as a child.  

Sorry for the delay in answering your query, but we have been away for a few days in South Wales looking for the wife’s paternal ancestors and meeting descendants of same.

The “Hastings Union Notices of Marriages” CD is a list with actual images of the register of people who were giving notice that within the next 3 months a marriage is intended to take place at the Registry Office – many more marriages took place by the calling of banns in the Anglican Churches which it does not include - but your Mary / Henry Chapman are not included; therefore we can assume they married in Church or Chapel.

Also a Hastings Baptism 1700-1877
Ann CHAPMAN c1859  daughter of the above.

The Baptism CD covers the following churches and dates

All Saints 1700 – 1851
Croft Chapel 1818 – 1829
Ore 1700 – 1837
St Clements 1700 – 1869
Mary in Castle 1828 – 1868
Methodist 1839 - 1877

Could not locate a Mary Chapman within those indexed dates.
 

This family could also be on the 1861 Eastbourne Census. Henry died within the next couple of years.

Have checked the 1861 census for Eastbourne without success for your Chapman Family – there is also no one with the surname DOWNER listed either.

Hope you can help, I'm not sure if Friston is covered in 1821 East Dean Census but I am looking for John Bartholomew born around 1800 and ancestors. He marrried Mary Ann Wildish (born 1805 East Grinstead) in Friston 2/5/1824 so I am hoping he was living with family in 1821.
