Gravestones

I was staying in Aylesbury with family last week, and decided to go gravestone hunting for ancestors headstones.

I know i have ancestors buried in Saunderton, Kimble, Stoke Mandiville, Radnage, Bledlow, plus other areas of Bucks
I was amazed at the amount of Headstones that are missing in Saunderton, Bledlow, and i still didn't find any of my ancestors, they are there but no stones.

Even Weston Turville, Aston Clinton is the same, my gt gt grandparents are buried at Weston Turville and i can't find the headstones for them ..grrr

But it was a nice drive out in the countryside

A familiar story. Been there,done that.

So often we expect to find our ancestors all lined up in the local cemetery.
But in reality very few actually had headstones, they were a luxury few could afford.

Even if they did have headstones so many things can have happened:

Crowded gravestones and plots reused. Headstones taken up and laid as paving or near the perimeter. When this happens no care is taken.

As money for the church dried up the plots were not cared for as they used to be. Headstones lean and become a Health & Safety issue (not) and get disposed of.

You mention Radnage amongst your parishes - I have a collection of information regarding the graves in the churchyard there. If you would like to give me some names I can take look and see if any of them figure. My information covers not just stones that are visible today but also the information from the burials book etc,

I did notice some odd paving at one of the churchyards which i did say to my brother i think they are headstones but you couldn't read them.

I have many Brooks family offshoots all around Bucks, so it woud only be the Brooks/Brookes surname from about 1780 to 1870 about 100 years

I have now taken a look at the information I have on gravestones in Radnage and I cannot find any Brook(e)s in the time span you mention. The only ones I have are relatively recent as follows:

Brooks Ernest – 1961 – F4 – LCY - 175
Brooks Joseph – 1990 – X1 – LCY - 305
Brooks Nora – 1984 – F4 – LCY - 278
Brooks Rosie – 1982 – X1 – LCY – 269

I'm afraid I only have years of burial for these as you can see. The letters and numbers after the year denote where in the church yard the stones are to be found - LCY means Lower Church Yard.

If you ever visit again I can give to more specific pointers as to where the burials are.

I wonder if you could check your list for me to see if any Bucklands were buried in Radnage - they would be from the 1800's
