Cullen Castle, Tramore
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 21:59 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know much about the history of this area? I have tried googling but it isnt coming up with much.

I have just received the marriage certificate for my great great grandparents Richard Cullen and Catherine Power.

They married in Tramore in 1866.

Richard Cullen was from Garrasus and Catherine was from Westown.

When googling Garrasus, I came across the mention of a Cullen Castle, so of course am now wondering if Cullen Castle has any connection to my Cullen ancestors.

Richard Cullen's father was Patrick Cullen and his occupation I think was a farmer, although it could say Harrier, the writing is hard to read.

Catherine's father was Patrick Power a Publican.

Cullen Castle, in Irish Caislean a Chuilinn, means Castle of the holly, the castle was lived in by the Power family. Information from "Tramore long ago" by Andy Taylor 1996.

thanks for the replies, only just seen this.

If my Cullen family lived in Garrarus, does anyone know whether the parish there would be responsible for baptisms and marriages etc, or would of be a different parish. I would like to see if I can trace them back any further.

The castle wasnt owned by any cullens, it was the De Paors who owned it. As far as I know they owned several castle towers along the coast. Theres almost no details of ownership of the castle tho. I grew up next door to it and used to play there every day! Thats an amazing picture you've taken btw.

I actually know where the Thomas Cullen you are referring to went from Westown. If you look up the 1901 Census of Ireland and go to Waterford, them go to Pembrokestown and check under Carrickavahane.  This is now called Carrickavantry now buy the way. Thomas Cullen was registered in this area in 1901. If you want more info on this let me know. Oh and that girl Kitz Dunphy is the Princess in exile of Cullencastle ha ha ha.

Hi
I know it has been a while since your inquiries re Cullens in Cullen Castle
So

CULLENCASTLE - Caislean a'Chuilinn. Castle of the Holly. This area was known as the "Two Villages of Quillans" during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The little stream which meanders through the townland bears the delightful name "Sruth na mBeannachtY' (the Strcam of tllc Blessings). Perhaps this little waterway separated the two villages in bygone days. The owner of thc townland in 1654 was James Bryver, an Irish Papist. who turned Protestant in order to hold on to his estatc. It was then known as "Cullen" and had a population of 18 Irish. The Castle which gives it's name to the townland 1s situated on an outcrop ol' rock. rhere is no tradition as to it's former proprietors. but it is thought to have been a Castle of the De le Poers. The Civil Survey doesn't mention a Castle on the townland, and the name Cullencastle wasn't in use in the 17th century.

If you put the following into you search engine
http://resources.waterfordcouncil.ie/records/web/BasicDeathRecordSearch/
Enter Cullen and under Tramore district
You get 3 or 4
Then enter Power and again under Tramore District
you get many
A suggestion there are many many Powers in the Tramore area so
Under surname put Power under christian name put in A and you get 28 names then start again put in Power again and then under surname put in B and so on with all the alforbet
All my best
Nicky Power

Hello,
I was directed to this post. My great great grandmother is Bridget Mary Cullen Hurley. She is the daughter of Michael Cullen & Margaret Roche Cullen. Her brother is the Thomas Cullen you are reffering to in this post. I have had a few mention Cullen Caslte & i had no idea what anyone was talking about. Is the Richard Cullen & Catherine Power related to Thomas Cullen? I been looking for information on my Cullens.
