Sub District
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 16:40 BST (UK) »
I have a birth cert:

Reg District   Saint George the Martyr Southwark
Sub District       "          "       "        "           "             same as  Reg District

Year  1844           for   Sarah Ann Collier.   born in Surrey Buildings.  Her father,  James, was a shoemaker

I would like to know if THE SUB DISTRICT  is correct,  and  does anyone have any info on  Surrey Buildings
 Thank you 2mm

may just mean the birth was recorded at the main Register Office ?

Here are the documented sub-districts

Registration County : London.
Created : 1.7.1837.
Abolished : 1.1.1870 (succeeded by St. Saviour Southwark district).
Sub-districts : Borough Road; Kent Road; London Road.
GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 1d (1852-69).

Did a search and found this map for Surrey Buildings http://www.ph.ucla.edu/epi/Snow/1859map/surrey_buildings_1849_a4.html

Gainsford Street is still there if you look at Streetmap

Hope it helps

Hi  Passed Master  and  Sylviaann   Thank-you both for replies.  I never thought about birth being recorded at main office. Sylviaann the map answered my question as to location, and  the conditions the family lived in they were in theses buildings on 1841/1851 census. Sarah's Mother died in 1845, and Jane 1842 aged 4. A few years before Snow's report, but may well have contributed to-wards their early deaths.

The info is very much appreciated   2mm :) :)
