Hi all  :)

Parents don't look right unfortunately, Sabrina.

I like Rosie's find pretty much actually. In 1881, the same Edward (now a Tin plate worker) and Mary Ann are in Aldershot.

Still trying to find them in 1871 ...

Hi again

In my neverending search for information on Mary Ann Smith, I have been in touch with the Jersey Registrar for BMD.

She has very kindly had a look through the birth registrations 10 years either side of 1855 for births in St Helier and also the 11 other parishes.  She has advised me that it is possible that this birth was not registered as it was not compulsory until the early 1870s.

She has also advised me that Mary Ann's parents may not have been registered (I have found no marriage for them as yet) and she may have been registered under her mother's maiden/surname  (which I do not have).

I have very recently discovered that she remarried a third time in 1898, Elham and have subsequently found her on the 1911 census, again place of birth is Jersey, Channel Islands.

In all the censuses I have for her she gives her place of birth as Jersey, can I assume that this is indeed correct?

Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas as to how I can break this brickwall please?

Thanks in anticipation ...

Thanks Ringrose.

There are a number of illegitimate Mary Anns which has led me to wonder whether perhaps Mary Ann's mother married an Edward Smith and he took the child on as his own?

I know for sure that her father's name was Edward Smith from the 2 marriage certs I have but this may not have been her natural father?

Thanks in anticipation.

It doesnt look very easy for you  to decide what actually happened. It is difficult when a child is born out of wedlock because you can never be sure. It so frutrating.

What was his occupation on both Mary Ann's marriage certificates?

Ringrose - Yes you are so right to use the work frustrating!  ;D

This particular branch of my tree is exceedingly frustrating because not only can I not go backwards and trace this gt gt grandmother as she was born in Jersey but I also cant trace her husband, my gt gt grandfather as he was born in Gibraltar and I have reached a dead end with that one too!  ???

Thanks in anticipation ...

Hi Rosie

1874 marriage cert states "lime worker"
1890 marriage cert states "licenced victualler"

Very confusing - I have posted already about this in April 2010.

Thanks in anticipation ...
