I think the second signature may have been of a professional witness.  Can't be sure of that but the educated handwriting leads me to think he wasn't a family member.

I'm hoping the witnesses will point me towards Sarah Ward's family.  She was born in Ipswich.

the first name is looks like Aof which of course it can't be!
surname could be White but doesn't look much like a 'W'

the second name John V?enall James/Janes/Jones
Paternal: Staffordshire, Shropshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, Durham, Wales, Arrondissements Oudenaarde and Gent, Belgium, -  - Maternal: Cheshire, Lancashire, Ireland

John Verrally witnesed the following marriage and several others, so is a professional.
The other signature does look like A White with a large, flamboyant W.
Not that many male names start with A and I noticed that an Andrew White, mariner, son of Arthur White, farmer, married Margaret Low in the same parish in 1839. This couple appear in the 1841 census (HO107/697/3) where he, aged 33, is born in 'Foreign Parts' which adds a little to the case.

I have attached Andrew's signature in 1839. It certainly has a large W but otherwise it is inconclusive. The earlier signature looks less educated but may partly stem from learning a new language/script.

It's possible that this Andrew White is the one who died in 1850 aged 38 on a hospital ship in Greenwich, which will make it harder to find his place of birth.

Richard
