FreeBMD won't have transcribed that recently; and would not have his middle name (just initial) anyway.

Does LAncashireBmd have anything? You'll need his birth year to help pin anything down though.

definitely - how on earth did you manage that. I obviously have a lot still to learn and think this is the place to do that.
Next question - how do I go about getting a copy of his death certificate to confirm the details?

I found the death on the complete GRO index - it's available in the UK in county record offices as well as some larger libraries, and online at one or two subscription sites.  It's not as easy to search as Free BMD, because you have to check each quarter, but as you knew the rough date, it didn't take too long!

You can order the cert online from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ - it costs £7.

George Muir Brown looks like a Scottish name so I looked him up on Scotlandspeople. He was born in 1865 at Kinning Park in the parish of Govan, on the south side of Glasgow, parents George Barr Brown, joiner journeyman (i.e. a worker, not owning his own business), and Isabella Dewar.

PS I hope the birth-certificate is legible. The original was too large to attach here so I had to compress it.
