Where do I go from here?

Hi all,
Can somebody please give me some advice?
I'm searching for the Furmedges in Liverpool (there seems to only be one family), but can find no trace of them before 1872.
I have the 1872 marriage certificate of Joseph Furmedge, which is the earliest mention I can find for any of them. The certificate says he was born in Liverpool in apx 1828 and his father was named Richard-a joiner. But I can find no mention of them in gores directories either before or after 1872, I've had the same result with voters registers.
After 1872 they are difficult to find but they are there.
I've checked freebmd, freecen, lancs bmd, censuses and parish registers and found nothing, so what do I do now? Do I keep trying and not succeeding or admit defeat and say my research is as complete as I can get it?

You write that you have checked sources like freebmd. How about checking the card indexes at libraries for furmedge (&Variant) b,m,d. Okay, you are not going to find 'your' chap's birth, but it may give you a location for the family name.

Does the marriage certificate specifically state that he was born in Liverpool, or was that the place where he was living at the time of his marriage and his birthplace could be elsewhere?

sorry it's the 1881 census which states he was born in Liverpool not his marriage cert.

I never trust census birth places   no siree.  Unless I get 3 that say the same.  What does 1891 say?

He actually died just before the census in 1891 and he can't be found in any other censuses.

IGI seems to see a lot of Furmedges in the SW around Dorset.

The problem I have is that I have very limited information about him, all I really know is that he married in 1872. I am not really sure about his age, on his marriage certificate he's 44 (1872), on the 1881 census he's 70 and when he died in 1891 he was 73
