James Best b. Hawick???
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 17:24 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters, I am seeking further information about James Best who, in 1839, at the time of his marriage, stated he was living in Hawick....I will attempt to add the snippet with that information....the other information from his marriage cert is that he was a "carrier" and his Father was Thomas Best, a "shepherd."  I know that's not a lot to go on, but it's all I have.   :'(   Thank you AND it appears I cannot add my snippet of information to this posting.....Pat

Hello ev and Lesley,   Thank you for the effort - HOWEVER, in 1839 "my" James Best married Harriet PAXTON.  Now, there is a situation that their first born child, Ann Best, who was born abt 1840 in Norham, NBL, England, however, in the 1841 census she is being raised by an Aunt in Norham......So, I think this particular James Best is not the gent I seek...on the marriage cert my James states his occupation is "carrier" ---  ???  I am not sure what that is.....  Thanks again for your interest..... Hello ev,  AMAZING!!!!! ;D   Your find certainly answers a lot of questions for me......apparently little Ann Best was enumerated TWICE - once in England 1841 and also in Scotland with her parents!!!!  Now, I am not greedy -- only needy --- I wonder now if the family remained in Roxburghshire and had other children??? Also, is the "wood yard" a building in Hawick??  And, I am wondering if James occupation of "carrier" could be something connected with transportation??? ???  The reason I ask that is that Harriet's family operated an inn (Velvet Hall) in Norham and I am thinking that may be how and where they met!!!  I REALLY appreciate your finding this family for me in 1841.  Happy dance time for me!!!  Pat

hi Pat  :)

can't see them on 1851 or 1861 census in scotland
wood yard could have been a timber yard , wood yard is between east end
hawick  and high street hawick on the 1841 census entries
N.B. could stand for North Britain

Hello ev, Thank you so very much for the extra effort.  Also, for your excellent suggestion what N.B. could stand for...I had not seen that abbreviation before.  Thanks again!  Pat
