In many cases the minister recorded the marriage after the event and mistakes were made in remembering the name. He could have got mixed up with the other Christians listed on the record.

Thanks all for the input.  Non the wiser but still hopeful that it might have been an oversight.  I'll need to back my research up.

Hi there,

I've got the name Christian in my tree various times.  For one of my ancestors, she seems to go between Christian and Catherine especially on census records.

Cheers,

Hi Kit,

Trying to answer your original question is Margaert and Christian Cockburn the same person, my answer is no.

Did a search on LDS site, and Christian was born 09 Apr 1711, baptised 15 Apr 1711 to parents James Cockburn and Margaret Couper. 2 years later, Margaret Cockburn was born 14 Aug 1713 baptised 23 Aug 1713 to same parents, so they are sisters. These are both extracted records so appear to be genuine.

Hope this answers your query.
