1841 & 1851 Census Elham lookup pls
« on: Sunday 06 March 05 20:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I would be very grateful if anyone could look for an ancestor in 1841 and/or 1851 census - James Southon born c.1839.

I have already encountered various spellings of the surname ie Southon, Southan, Southern and Southern between him and his children.

In 1871 he is living in Folkestone with his 'intended' and his occupation is listed as Labourer.

I may have found him in 1861 working with a brother (John b. 1944) in Ottinge, so hopefully the 1851 census will show them both within a family unit.

Thanks in advance

Stephanie

Hi Stephanie

If you have no luck here, the Heritage Room at Folkestone Library, Grace Hill, Folkestone 01303 850123 have a card index for the Shepway/Elham area census for 1851 at least.

Good luck

Hi Casalguidi,

Thanks for that excellent suggestion :)

Although I only live about 10 miles away from Folkestone, I work full time so visiting during opening hours takes an inordinate amount of planning :'(

Good job the Internet is open 24/7  ;D

Cheers, Stephanie.
