Thankyou very much for the info Peterbennett, it probably is correct as the surname has been spelt differently on each census,
Rich
ps don't suppose you know if their is an 1841 census available

Hi
Yes I do have a copy of the 1841, are we still looking at Beam or Wood streets, there is no name index so its a matter of going through it page by page, there seems to be a large age gap between James and Mary, could Martha be a second wife for John ?

Hi Peterbennett,
I would go for Beam Street although I think it's quite a long street. The only info I had on Thomas Betteley's parents is from his marriage certificate in 1858 which lists his father as John who is a 'Currier' .I hadn't found Thomas with his parents prior to your help but have just found a marriage for John Betteley to Martha Barker 22 FEB 1832 Acton By Nantwich which fits the criteria nicely.
I am hoping to match the occupation now on 1841 census,
kind regards,
Rich

Hi Richard
I have found your family in both the 1841 and 1861 which as I thought shows he was "married" twice. This is how I think it pans out.

Nantwich Parish records show John Betteley married Sophia Tilley both of Nantwich parish 7/9/1831 witnesses were Eliza Tilley and John Coventry.

1/9/1833 Thomas baptised (F) John currier (M) Sophia
10/1/1836 George baptised        ~                       ~
5/10/1838 James baptised         ~                        ~

15/4/1844 Sophia Betteley of Beam Street buried

17/7/1851 Elizabeth Betteley baptised (F) John (M) Martha of Beam Street
5/1/1854 Elizabeth Betteley buried

6/4/1854 Mary Ann Bettley baptised (F) John (M) Martha Beam Street

10/9/1862 John Betteley of Beam Street buried

I cannot find a marriage for John and Martha

1841 census HO107-117-04-Page 8 Beam Street Nantwich
