Right then, after extensive head-scratching & note taking... 

Who do you think are Harry & Agnes that appear on the 1871 & 91 census but not on the 1881?

Oh dear, so the 1870's birth years are guesses for both Fred and Beatrice?

No offence,  but    but Guesses (sometimes we must but not recommended and should always be announced as such), have to be well calculated and used with extreme caution - for example  they married in late 1901. So by 1904 when Fred jnr was born, I would expect they had at least one earlier child born (regardless if the child lived or died). Also, for the times - if it was a first marriage for the pair of them, I'd guess (if I had to) that  Beatrice if not Fred would be nearer 20 to 25 than 30 at the time of Marriage. At an age of 30, I'd wonder if she was previously married and that she may not even be nee TIMMS. Based on so little concrete or near-reliable info, I would have wondered if  she was born between 1878 and 1885.  All in all  '1870' is a very unsafe guess for her - especially now with what looks very like them  in Kings Norton in 1911.

Kings Norton, by the way, covered parishes in both Staffs and Worcs., so in 1911 they may be living in a part of what is commonly seen as Staffs but which was officially part of Worcs.

It looks very like the BENTON's were a large clan - and all that has been found to date may well be relatives who with a bit of figuring, may lead back to the Northants people you've heard family stories about.  But there is no way of knowing for sure yet. 

I know how it is to have to watch the pennies to afford all these costly documents - but if you want to get the best bang-for-buck then their Marriage certificate is what you need, before anything else. This may go some way unlocking the whole shebang for you.  Like I said, how awful it would be for you to find after years and pounds of research, you'd followed the wrong line.

The marriage certificate will give  ages, occupations, address and hopefully father's names and maybe the witness names will also be useful.

I would also recommend paying for & downloading that 1911 Census image if you can - it will have extra details on it which may confirm it's your people, and their places of birth etc -  therefore leading us to the correct Frederick BENTON (and Beatrice TIMMS) on the earlier census.

Sorry Ambly, I didn't mean to confuse everyone - I started looking for horse dealers in Northants rather than people with dates, and got a bit of the info you all found, so it all slots together in some order - once I have the B'ham marriage cert (ordering tomorrow), I can get onto that side.
There are alot of Bentons in Northants & surrounding, but half seem to be horse dealers and most of the rest are shoe makers, so the horse ones I can narrow down & order some of them at least.
All the searching hasn't been a waste, as it's been a big help to me so far - and for the Beatrice & Fred, I searched high & low but could find very little, so at least there's not hundreds of them to choose from

This lends further weight to that 1911 Census which would put Frederick born about 1881.

I just rechecked the 1911 Census Index, to try establish the pob stated (one has to enter in the term precisely as used in the index or else it comes up no match).
