« on: Tuesday 08 March 05 07:31 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather was to sing me a song when I was a lot younger. It was a War Song not sure if it was from the First or Second it went. Sergeant Major said to me when you gonna marry cause I sould like to know cause every time I look in your
eyes it makes me wanna go Round the Corner behind the Tree .... then it just seemed to repeat this anybody know all the words or who sang it.
info gratefully received

I found the text on google (enter "Sergeant Major said to me" , with quotes !) here,
http://www.oneword.com/mt/archives/000238.html

'around the corner and under a tree, Sergeant Major said to me "who would marry you? I would like to know, because every time I look at your face if makes me wanna go" Around the corner and under a tree, Sergeant Major said to me "who would marry you? I would like to know, because every time I look at your face if makes me wanna go" '
But I can't make out in what connection.

Somebody here http://www.darrinandjill.com/Family/childhood.htm remembers it as one of his favourite songs,

and here, "... a song .. my Grandmother  taught it to me ...":
http://www.thrivent.com/lutheransonline/mboards/SingleMingle/display_topic.phtml?topic_id=44454

but no other explanations given !

Possibly a marching cadence ??? That would explain the repetition ... but I don't think it is regular enough for that.

then there was this one:
NOKE IS BACK!
Noke, the creative force behind "Don't Kick My Dog Around," a huge hit from Billy's first album, has contributed another song to the band whcih they are considering recording on an upcoming album. Here's a peek at the lyrics:

"Around the corner and under a tree, a Sergeant Major said to me, who would marry you I would like. . . ."

It sounds like a children's song - one of those songs which goes on and on in an endless loop until the children finally get sick and tired of it?

I can't think of another one just at the moment.  I'm sure someone else will!

Or perhaps a song which accompanies a children's game or a skipping song?

Mum used to sing this to us kids
'Felix kept on walking, kept on walking still, he was like his daddy so they called him Paddy, Paddy got the measles, Felix got the flu, Paddy died Felix cried he got a bit of rag and he wiped his eyes, dinner was ready at half past 5 but he kept on walking still'

I hope I have the words right  :-[

Clutching at straws here---Any chance you know a surname for Felix and Paddy? Been looking for "my" Felix's father Patrick (Paddy) for years
                Many thanks,
                       Nancy
