Death certificate only shows Co Galway, no place name.

Hi There are two births 1837 on this site. First you will have to sign up to the site. Then put Michael Phillips in the search engine they have on it and it will bring two  matches up, put fathers name in to . The click on where it says "Parish / District :" and try ever one of them and you should find your parish he was born in. The only thing is that to see a full transcribes of the baptisms you will have to pay i am afraid   :'(
And this does not mean he is your man but worth looking into to give you an idea of possible birth parish? It cost nothing to search , just pay to get a copy of the transcribes.
Good luck.

I downloaded both of the baptism records and I'm none the wiser!

ANNAGHDOWN Michael bap 2 Apr 1837 father Thomas, mother Eleanor Burke
Sponsers: Michael Phillips and Mary King

TUAM Michael bap 5 Nov 1837 father Thomas, mother Bridget Lally
Sponsers: Stephen Phillips and Mary Lally

any idea on how to prove the right one. Marriage cert (NZ)won't have parents details

Not all parishes have records back to the 1830's, so be careful assuming that your Michael is necessarily one of the ones found on the IFHF database.

Usually you can narrow down the correct person by checking the location of the baptism, but in this case it looks like the only clue you have is Co. Galway, rather than a specific parish.

You may also wish to check a few years either side of 1837 in case the year of birth is not accurate on his death cert (it depends on knowledge of the informant).
