1851 and 1861 census lookup for MORRIS in Alberbury or Pontesbury
« on: Tuesday 08 March 05 11:27 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a Thomas Morris born c1844 in Alberbury (according to 1871 census) or Pontesbury (according to 1881 census). In 1871 he was living with his wife Hannah (possibly Lealand) in Habberley District 2 as a lead miner with 3 children under the age of 10. In 1881 he was living at Malehurst, Pontesbury District 1 with 6 children as a railway platelayer.

I think that he and Hannah were married in 1867 so he would be single in 1851 and 1861. I am trying to trace the previous generation of Morris's and see if he had any brothers and sisters. If possible it would also be nice to trace Hannah's family - she was born in Weston, Shropshire around 1845.

thanks

Alex

Hi Alex

I had a look in 1851 in Alderbury for Thomas but couldn't find him, but haven't looked in Pontesbury yet as it is quite a bit bigger.

I looked in Weston for Hannah but no luck, on the 1871 census she is stated as born in Wentnor, south of Pontesbury but not really very close, then born in Pontesbury in subsequent census', so i will have a look at the 1851 for wentnor.

had a look at Wentnor but no Lealand's there

looked thru pontesbury and found the following families: Most of the images weren't very readable at all.

address: Cruck Meole (near Pontesbury)
Morris family lodgers at a household
name age birthplace occupation
Thomas, 50, Pontesbury, ag lab
Sarah 40 Westbury
William 10 Pontesbury
Thomas 8 Pontesbury
Charles ?5? Pontesbury
***************

address: Pontesbury
John Morris 44 ? lab
Eliza? 42
?Martha? 11
?Emma? 7
William 5
Thomas 3
Hannah 1

All born in Plealey (town near Pontesbury)

********************
address ?ing hill,Pontesbury
David Lealand 47 Lead miner
Ann 41
William 14
Sarah (under 10 - cannot read)
Hannah 6
Joshua 4
All born Minsterley.

***then living next door
address: ? girls

William Morris 37 ?Rushton? lead miner
Bridget 31 ?Rushton?
Thomas 5 ?Rushton?
Mary 3 Minsterley
Sarah 2 Minsterley
William Bowen (can't read relationship) age 1.

i can't stress how unreadable it was so don't take anything to be correct, the marriage certificate will be the best option to narrow down the options as Thomas Morris is quite a common name

hope this helps  ::)

Thanks Tara,

I wasn't sure about the Weston/Wentnor bit - it was a little unclear in the later census records. Also I found a marriage index for Thomas and a Hannah registered at Lilleshall which made me think of Weston being more likely. I think the next stage will be to try and track down a few of the certificates.

Thanks again for your help

Alex

Hi guys,

Just finished wading through the parish register listings for Alberbury. It looks like Thomas Morris was baptised on 13 Apr 1845 and was the son of John and Elizabeth Morris (marriage not registered at Alberbury but must have lived nearby).

Thomas was the 3rd of at least 5 children that are registered there up to 1853:

27 Sep 1840 John Morris
04 Jan 1843 Sarah Morris
13 Apr 1845 Thomas Morris
04 Dec 1847 Jane Morris
03 Apr 1853 Mary Morris

The registered names have some very creative spellings of Morris (Mories, Morries, Moris etc)
Doing a quick lookup on FreeBMD gave a possible marriage date of 08 Sep 1831 at St Giles in Shrewsbury - but this seems too remote in terms of dates and location and I know that this is still incomplete.

If anyone would like the Morris's that I have transcribed for Alberbury I can email the spreadsheet - saves a lot of time trawling through familysearch and ancestry.com.

regards

Alex
