Daniel Gain - birth

Can anyone help?   Where is the first port of call to find a birth registration in Ireland?   The 1881 census tells me that Daniel Gain was born in Ireland.  I have yet to find him in later census records, but I am hoping to narrow the search to a specific area.  He was born in or around 1831.

Macclesfield - Potts, Ashness, Hooley, Haslam, Walton, Heapy, Hulme, Wildigg, Walton
Congleton - Cooke
Stockport - Whittingham, Sheppard
Ireland - Walton, Gain

There are quite a lot of people with the surname Gain in the IGI at familysearch.org
Check it out - you never know

If you go to this site

http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm

and type in 'Gain' in the searchbox, it will give you a table of which counties the name appeared in mid 1800's and how many households (plus some other helpful info).
