thomas scott & sophia
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 16:51 BST (UK) »
Thomas Scott's death is registered in Stamford,77 in 1866. His wife Sophia also died in Stamford 80 in 1869. I'm trying to establish her maiden name and where and when they were married. I've only just joined RootsChat and I'm not too sure how this all works. Am I doing it correctly?

Hello, welcome and yes you are doing fine!

Rather than jump straight from their deaths to their marriage it might be best to go one step at a time and work back through the censuses, to trace their movements if any and see what family they had etc.
Before we start hunting, can you say if you have already got them in 1861, 51 ,41 censuses?

All I have is the birth of their son Valentine Scott 14th April 1828, registered in Collyweston. Unlike Scotland a birth certificate in England gives no details of the parents marriage or the mother's maiden name, hence my frustration. I have no census details Many thanks for the prompt reply

An English birth certificate would give mothers maiden name, but Valentine was born before Civil Registration started, so there were no birth certs then.
Do you know if they had any children after 1837? they may have been a bit old by then.
I'll see if 1851 shows any - 1841 doesnt give relationships so it is unclear if Emma age 2 is theirs or not.

A birth in 1828, in England, wouldn't have been registered or have a certificate. That didn't start until 1837 ( Scotland was 1855).

So what you have is is likely to be Valentine's baptism, which would normally give the father's name but not necessarily the mother.

At least you know that they were in Colley Weston in 1841 and there should be a chance of finding the marriage in the parish records.

Liz,  I had gone for 1841 as aswell!
