1841C mystery
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 19:16 BST (UK) »
??? I don't think in all my research and all the family surnames that I have turned up, there was ever one which was as mis-spelt as
                                            Boag
In 1851, poor William (c 1820, Newcastle) & his family are Boby.
William is a Journeyman Hardwareman.
Is that the forerunner of the man with the big case who opened it on my mothers step and displayed all his brushes and dishcloths in the 1950s!
In 1861, they are Boaz.
I can't find him at all in 1841
He could have been in Gateshead. He was married in 1841, and his first two bairns were born there in 1842 and 1844.
Any ideas, anyone, please?

 Liz,

Interesting to note that the misspellings on censuses 1851 (Boby)and 1861
(Boaz) are mistakes of modern transcribers and not of the enumerators who both recorded Boag !

The man on your mother's doorstep would have been classified as a Hawker.
The "Journeyman" bit of a job ( e.g. Journeyman Tailor etc) implied that he was employed/paid on a daily basis

The William Boag on census 1841 ( page ref 845/2 8-10) was I think "coffee roasting"

You will know the date of his marriage ! I see from FreeeBMD and Newcastle Register Office site that he married Jane Frame in quarter-ending March 1841.
As 1841 was not taken until 6th June, they should be a couple somewhere !

Thanks both  for the replies
The William Boag (bapt 28. 1. 1822, Newcastle) who was the coffee roaster in Pilgrim Street was married to Isabella Chicken. I thought they were my ancestors, But it may have been this other William Boag who was married to Jane Frame.
I'm trying to sort it out.
I'll look for a couple.
Thanks for the information about Journeymen, Michael. I've now Googled it, and find that they were often master craftsmen. What, I wonder would he be making in hardware.
