16th Lancers????
« on: Wednesday 09 March 05 10:44 GMT (UK) »
Iam looking for Edmund Ingham who was a Private in the 16th Lancers. I have his name on a Birth Certificate 1865 Burnley in the County of Lancashire.

Does any one know where I can start to look for the 16th Lancers?  The only information on Edmund I have is his wifes name - Ellen formerly Heys and their Daughter Mary Ellen born 1865.

Thanks

Matty :)

Hi Matty

Often the soldiers' discharge papers amongst the official army records kept at Kew, London are a good place to start.  See the relevant information leaflet:

Have you not found the family in the 1871 census?

Hi Matty,

another possibility is direct by the Lancers : http://www.qrl.uk.com/h_16.html

they have a link for "historical enquiries" http://www.qrl.uk.com/h_enq.html

where they say:
As a service to the public, the Museum will endeavour to answer historical enquiries concerning any aspect of the history of the 5th, 16th, 17th, 21st, 16th/5th, and 17th/21st Lancers. Enquiries should be forwarded by email or post. Important: see the note below on service records

BUT:

The Museum receives many enquiries asking for the service records of men who served with one of The Queen's Royal Lancers antecedent regiments. Please note that we do not hold individual service records.

These are held by The Public Record Office (for pre-Great War records) and the Army Records Office (for records from the Great War onwards). Their addresses are ...
[list of addresses follows]

Hope this helps,
Bob

Although not 100% complete, its helped me a lot.

Hi Bob, D ap D and Casalguildi,

Thank you all for the web sites that you have all given me (should keep me quiet for a bit).  I have only just received the Birth Certificate of Mary Ellen this morning  - off I go on to another line and this is a first "Lancers" for me.

Thanks Matty
