The Mysterious Murphys
« on: Monday 26 October 09 21:09 GMT (UK) »
You know you're obsessed when you start doing trees for friends as well as your own --

Anyhow. James Murphy was a single school teacher in Bath in 1851. In 1861, he was living with his wife Jane in South Stoke, and with them were 3 children - John age 8, Mary age 3 and Agnes Catherine age 1.

In 1871, James and Jane were back in Bath with 2 more children, Joseph (b 1961) and Augustine (b 1865); John was at a boarding school and I can't find the girls anywhere. James died in 1877 in Bath and in 1881, Jane and her now adult children John, Joseph, and Agness were in Clapham.

Joseph went to Ireland and stayed there (oldest child born in Co Fermanagh in 1891). John disappeared - ? back to Ireland as well. Agnes probably married in 1887 in Edmonton to Henry Wood or Henry Worsley then disappeared.

I've confirmed the births of all the children in Bath except Mary. I cannot find her on freeBMD, Bath BMD or any census except 1861. Augustine also appeared once, in 1871, then disappeared.

If anyone can track down Mary post-1861, Augustine post-1871, John post-1881 and Agnes post marraige I'd be most grateful - and so would my friend!

Iagree with most of your post ,mary married 1878 to a micheal roche and moved to swansea.
john [my grandfather]moved to portsmouth  and changed his name  and the famil to brand .
he wrote songs etc under the name oliver brand ,o  brand and j s murphy  he died portsmouth 1907.
Ihave no info on agnes ,or austin after 1891 ,but his daughter katheen was living with her aunt

Is your friend a relative of this family   any help?

Hello Notlob

Let's keep things on this thread rather than spread across several - it will make it easier to follow.

My friend is descended from James Murphy and Jane (maiden name Flannery) through their son Joseph.

Yes, Joseph was a schools inspector and you can find him on the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses. he married Jane O’Reilly in Maynooth in 1887.

Re Jane Flannery, I found a possible baptism in Dublin in 1827. I haven’t found her marriage to James Murphy so would appreciate any info there!
