for gmarkdonald

My wife is a Clegg, daughter of a Clegg, son of Alexander Clegg (born 1900), son of Matthew Clegg, son of Richard Clegg (I think) from the Copeland Islands. Matthew was married to Rebecca Hayes. If this is the same connection, I would like to swap info.

Hi,
The father of the Matthew Clegg who married Rebecca Hayes in 1876 was Richard according to Ancestry Ireland. If this is the same Richard who was the 80 year old living on the Copeland Islands in 1901 with his wife Esther then it is possible that she was Esther Emerson who married Richard in Newtownards Registrars Office on 25 Aug 1845.

That was quick. Thanks for the confirmation. According to the 1901 Census there were five families living on the Copeland Islands, Anderson, Emerson and Clegg. The last residents were Clegg, Frederick and Aise, who left the island in 1953. They died in 1964 and 1965 and were the last burials in the island graveyard.

Hi Era,
One COPELAND family tree exists with a connection to a Phillips line in
volume 20 in the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in the LinenHall library, Belfast. Perhaps a local Copeland could visit for you. If not then I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and you should be prepared to pay a fee for copying, post and packing, and perhaps some staff time and overheads. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library. [Mr Blackwood often made notes on the page{s} following the tree.]

Good luck, Jim

Thanks for that information Jim. It must have taken some real digging to find that one! I will try to investigate when I get the opportunity.

Hi there, I have a Mary Anne Copeland born about 1800 possibly in Ireland who married John Edwards in St David's Welsh church in Liverpool on 9th Dec 1839. She then had a daughter Hannah in Halkyn Flintshire in 1842. Any connection? Flower
