One last suggestion and then I quit.

William Bastard baptised 29th May 1722 at Churchstow, Devon. Parents: Sampson Bastard and Anne Bussell (Married 24th August 1721 at Kingsbridge).

According to the previously mentioned website (link above) Sampson was the grandson of William Bastard (baptised 1616 at West Alvington) who was described in a marriage settlement document as 'William Bastard of Gerston'.

Churchstow parish church is 2.7 miles from Gerston Farm.

I now see that the website previously mentioned (link above) has William (baptised Churchstow 1722) marrying a Mrs Margaret Bawden at Exeter in 1747, so I definitely quit. Best of luck to anyone trying to sort this out.
