George Scott/Elizabeth Arbuckle Glasgow 1850s
« on: Monday 09 November 09 01:18 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on the above couple.
They were both born in Scotland, married presumably in the 1840s and had at least one child, a daughter Marion, in 1851, before migrating to Otago New Zealand in 1863, where they may have had another daughter in 1868.
They are my GGG gpts.
Daughter Marion Scott married William Hudson Walker in Invercargill NZ in 1874 and had 12 children.
Any information would be most welcome as I cannot find even the NZ death certificates for George and Elizabeth Scott.

Just noticed your post.

Have you posted on New Zealand board?
My family migrated about the same time and with the help from NZ found them.

Hi,
I am also a descendant of William Hudson Walker and Marion Scott, living in Dunedin, NZ.  I have been trying to find out Marion's parents names, and I notice that you have them as being George Scott and Elizabeth Arbuckle - could you please let me know where you obtained that information?  Also, I have Marion Scott travelling to New Zealand in 1874, with her future grandmother, Elizabeth Walker, and William's brother Robert Walker were also on board.  Many thanks.

Scottish Records are on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk a low cost pay to view site, you can search for free.

I have checked the information on the original post but no such records, I would guess, as there were no responses to that post, others may have also tried.

There are 18 Marion Scott Church of Scotland birth records and 5 others between 1844 & 1860, if you have more information on Marion you will be able to narrow it down.

Detailed family tree here www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K8CN-ZRQ

Was just looking to see if we could get further details on Marion Scott from the names used for their children. First two children post marriage look to be likely called after William Walker's parents. The next two John Arbuckle Walker and Agnes Scott Walker. Not sure if they at least indicate the name of Marion's mother?

Thank you everyone for your replies - I've already searched the Scotland's People website, and have the info for William Hudson Walker as well.  It's just Marion's parents that I haven't been able to find.

I wonder .... there's a marriage of a John Arbuckle to a Marion Scott in Avondale in 1769. There's only one child in the SP indexes, Janet, their 10th (yes, tenth) child, baptised in Kilmarnock in 1789.

Could Elizabeth Arbuckle have been a granddaughter of this couple?

No, I suppose it's not very likely.

More speculation

1861 Census, Larkhall, parish of Dalserf
William Scott, 70
Marion Scott, wife, 59
James Scott, son, 20
Marion Craig, servant, 16
William Scott, grandson, 12
Marion Scott, granddaughter, 9.

In 1851, also Dalserf
William Scott, 60
Marron Scott, 46
William Scott, son, married, 24
Hugh Scott, son, 15
George Scott, son 11
James Scott, 9
William Weir Scott, lodger, 22

And 1841
William Scott, 50
Merren Scott, 38
Shusan Scott, 17
William Scott, 14
John Scott, 12
Margaret Scott, 10
Jean Scott, 8
Hugh Scott, 5
George Scott, 2
William Wear, 11

Looks like William Scott and Marion Young, married Dalserf 1826. Children
William, b 1826
Hugh, b 1836
James, b 1841

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
