I’m trying to trace the marriage for Thomas Hughes & Jane who appear on the following censuses and birth details of the eldest daughter Susannah born 1854. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a second marriage and a blended family. The family seems to have lived in Liverpool since the 1860 but were born in Wales
Any earlier census information would also be gratefully received.
1871 census living at 12 Cellar Boundary St East, Liverpool
Thomas Hughes, head, 42, born 1829 Anglesea Beaumaris, Dock Labourer
Jane Hughes, wife, 49, born 1822 Anglesea Beaumaris
Mary P Hughes, daughter, 8, scholar, born 1863 Liverpool
**Catherine Hughes, daughter, 6, scholar, born 1865 Liverpool
Susannah Hughes, daughter, 17, born 1854 Beaumaris, dressmaker
1881 census living at 16 Carnarvon Street, Kirkdale, Liverpool
Thomas Hughes, head, 50, born 1831 Anglesea Wales, Labourer
Jane Hughes, wife, 59, born 1822 Anglesea Wales
**Susanna Hughes, daughter, 16, born 1865 Liverpool, servant
1891 census living at 44 Grasmere Port, Walton, Liverpool
John Shackley, head, 32, born 1859 Liverpool, Shopman paper hangings
**Susannah Shackley (Hughes) wife, 25, born 1866 Liverpool
Jane Hughes, mother-in-law, widow, 69, born 1822 Beaumaris Wales
Mary Moreland, lodger, widow, 35/85, born 1856/1806 in Whetstone (poor handwriting)
** I’ve found an entry on BMD for birth of Catherine Susannah Hughes Q1 1864 so believe these are the same person
I’ve also found a possible burial entry for Thomas Hughes in Toxteth Park Cemetery for 9 February 1890. He was living at 76 Warwick Street at the time of his death, and his age was recorded as 70. This gives him a birth as circa 1820 which is 10 years older than the censuses indicate, so I may have the wrong Hughes.
