Am I at a dead end?
« on: Wednesday 11 November 09 20:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I am looking for some information about my grandmother - Florence Skevington.

I know that she was born in 1891 (as this was information from my mother's birth certificate I do not know where she was born).

I know that she was in Canada (living at 27 (N) Park Street Brantford Ontario) in 1914, because I have a record of her giving birth to my mother in the February (14th).  Then I found records of her departure to England 6 weeks later.  But I can't find any information on her other than those two records.  I've checked home children records, shipping information and Canadian Census... all to no avail.  I also can't find a record of her in the UK before 1914.

Can anyone please help me find a starting point?  Or give me any clues about other records I could go to to search for her pre 1914?

Many thanks

Hi ColSteve

Did they stay in England - if so, which part?

Have got the record of their arrival in England (was it Florence and Miss F SKEVINGTON Liverpool)?

Cheers

Yes, they stayed in England, in the Nottingham area...  where she later married a Simms (abt 1915).  Yes,  the information I found for her arrival matches yours.  Do you have any more information, particularly for  the period before her giving birth/her departure from Canada?  Or do you have a connection?

I've investigated the Bedford connection, and believe that's not the same Florence, but thanks for the suggestion.  Everything is gratefully received.

Yes, she was single when she gave birth - what made you ask?  Do you have more information? I know the father's name on the birth certificate was W Mitchell (I've still not done research on him yet).  What number north Park Street did your dad live?  Florence's was 217.

The Florence without a middle name who married in 1916 in Basford district, to David F Simms:
I think she's on the 1911 census of Basford as "Florrie" Skevington, and in 1901 in Ilkeston as Florence Skevington. Her father is on the 1881 as "Sam Shevington" with family.

Ah! - some of the family appear to be listed as "Skeavington" - including Florence, b. Mar 1891 Basford.

If you know she was the one m. David Simms then you should probably get that certificate to confirm the details.
