National Roll of the Great War Manchester Volume
« on: Thursday 12 November 09 11:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to confirm that PVTE T (Thomas) 2519 Price featured in the above document is my Grandfather.
He does not appear to feature in the recently released service records. I only need to prove age or next of kin to confirm who he is but I am really struggling.
An address of 14 Lord Street, Hulme is given and this is a street my ancestors lived on and around but I cannot get any more information.
Does anyone know how / if I can access the source of the entry in the above document???

Any help to fill the information gap would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The information in the National Roll was simply that provided at the time by the families of man who had served. I would suggest that it would be impossible to gain access to the original information provided to the publishers, I'm afraid.

From the Manchester Roll:

Price, T, Private, 8th Lancashire Fusiliers

He volunteered in September 1914, and was sent almost immediately to Egypt where he took part in the operations on the Suez Canal in February in 1915, and in other actions on that front.  After this, he unfortunately contracted severe illness, of which he died in hospital at Cairo on April 8th 1915.  His body lies in Cairo Cemetery.  He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star and the General Service Medal and Victory Medals.

Have you checked the 1911 census to see whether he was living there then - this will give you the family as well which should help you find out if it is your grandfather.

My husband's grandfather was included in the National Roll of the Great War - Manchester. Luckily for me the address was the same as recorded on his marriage certificate a few years later & I was able then to be positive that they were the same & that it was actually my husband's grandfather mentioned in the National Roll.

All entries in the National Roll have to be taken with a pinch of salt...

It was a subscription based publication, and you had to pay to get in. It went bust before it was completed.

That being said...It is a useful adjunct to research. "Soldiers Died" is better, and can be accessed via FindMyPast. The Anpestry version is a poor transcription, as it has all WW1 soldiers  killed in Aldershot...Just plan lazy. The Catering Corps was never that bad! ;D ;D
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
