Salkeld
« on: Friday 13 November 09 17:00 GMT (UK) »
Is there, or was there a Salkeld Square at anytime in Runcorn?  is there any special significance with the name, as there are a few Salkelds' in the town cemetry.  The name also features across the Mersey in the Liverpool area where Salkeld Square may very well be or have been.  Thank you for any guidance. Frank.

There is a Salkeld Street in Northwich, but there is no Salkeld Square in Runcorn.
The villages of Great Salkeld and Little Salkeld are in Cumbria.

Hi Frank,
There was a Salkelds Square in Runcorn  on the 1841 and 1851 censuses.
It appeared to be near/next to Mersey Street.
1841 Ref HO107/95 17/4 2
1851 Ref HO107/95 6/6 6

Hi,
Sorry Stan and Frank, i gave you completely the wrong reference for 1851..
Should read H0107/2164  406/6 and pages after.
I found a reference for a Salken Wharf in 1841 that was the wrong reference above.
Best wishes

The Arthur that married into my tree in the 1900s owned a stone quarry.  In the 1891 census he was a salt broker and an estate agent.  In 1901 be owned a stone quarry company and something I cannot read (you can look up Arthur Salkeld (1851) if you want to.

His father, William Frances Salkeld was Secretary of Water Works (I am not sure if this is a government position or he worked for the Water Works) and actuary of Savings Bank.  This is according to the 1871 census.

He is mentioned in this book:

http://books.google.ca/books?id=ElETAAAAYAAJ&pg=PT597&lpg=PT597&dq=actuary+savings+bank+William+Francis+Salkeld&source=bl&ots=_Z2q38d4qY&sig=e4fQ_bjTgkPJD4MObM4cdhJabO4&hl=en&ei=5HI_S5TTJYT-sgPUq9TFBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAgQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=actuary%20savings%20bank%20William%20Francis%20Salkeld&f=false

on between pages 292 L2 and 292 L3  (maybe only the left pages are numbered???).  It simply lists him as the actuary at the Savings Bank in Runcorn and his salary/amount of security.

I would it imagine a square could be named after this family.  They weren't celebrity, but they weren't standard or typical either.

There is a family site for Stephen Parle that claims the family lived at Salkeld Square.  When I tried to find them in the census according to when they lived there,  I cannot find them at all.  I can find the kids in 1881, but not 1871.

Hi Everyone

This post has a bit of mix some people looking for info on Salkeld Square, Runcorn with others having an interest the Salkeld family who lived in Runcorn through the 1800`s this reply probably will be of more interest to the latter.

A book now out of print called "SALKELDS through Seven Centuries" written by J. Grange Moore published by Phillimore ISBN 0 85033 644 9 the result of J. Grange Moore researching his Salkeld family history.

This book in two chapters 14) The Salkelds into Cheshire and 15) Arthur Salkeld and family, covers in great detail the Runcorn Salkeld`s the chapters even have sketch drawings of Runcorn and properties the Salkeld families lived in.

These include :-

No 29) 12 Waterloo Road, Runcorn
No 30) 13 The Holloway, Runcorn
No 31) All Saints Church, Runcorn
No 32) Kinderton House, Runcorn

No mention of a Salkeld Square though

J. Grange Moore did not live to see his work published a real shame it is a very good source of information on the Salkeld family especially the early families of Cumberland and Westmorland also Runcorn of course.

It is still possible to get a copy of the book although the prices being currently asked are a bit steep  :'(

I hope this will be of interest
