1841 NSW Census
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 04:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Just wondering if anybody has access to the above census.

I am trying to chase records of a John Nicholson who lived in Newbury, Sydney. I am trying to find out who resided at this place on census night.

I am chasing a long shot that my g-g-g-g-grandmother was a convict in the employment of John Nicholson.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Hi nedda,
Have tried all variations and found nothing.
I suppose you have her Certificate of Freedom?

Hi Alison,

Thanks, yes she is a very illusive lady.  All we really know about her is that she was in the employ of a Jn Nicholson esquire in 1839 and received her certificate of freedom in 1842.

From there we lose her.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Alison,

Been thinking, you said that you tried all variations and found nothing.

So wondering if convicts were included in census?  Because I would have thought if she wasn't in her employers house, then she must have been staying somewhere (ie: factory or house somewhere), so she should appear on the census somewhere. Am I right in that train of thought?

Thanks

According to the convict muster of 1837,
Sarah GILCHRIST, age 28, arrived on the Mary 1835, was in the employ of J Nicholson Sydney, also in 1837

Do you have earlier information about her?  I'm happy to hunt a bit more for her if you would like.

Convict Transportation records show
Sarah KILCHRIST, convicted at Pontefract, Yorkshire, 12 January 1835, sentence 7 years.

You say you have no information about her after 1842, so may I ask how you know she is your ancestor?

Cheers, Judith

Hi Judith,

Thank you so much.

Sarah Kilchrist was my 4 x g'grandmother.

From what we know is that she was 35 years old when transported from Pontefract in 1835 aboard the Mary III (5) and sent to Port Jackson, NSW for stealing chocolate and a piece of beef with her daughter.

She received a ticket of leave in 1839, as long as she remained in the employ of J Nicholson.

In 1842 she received her certificate of freedom, that's the last we hear of her.

I have checked deaths & marriage's and can't find anything.  We know she didn't return or have any contact with her family back in England.

She she would have been 42 when she got her freedom, so I don't know if she would have had anymore children, so question if she would have got remarried.  Funnily enough her husband in England never re-married.   I would love to find out what happened to her.

Thanks

Bit More,

The NSW State Archives holding for the 1841 census is ONLY a partial record of that census....  the rest was lost.  What is available includes all the surviving HOUSEHOLDERS' returns and abstracts ....  As I understand it, there's no surviving records for what is now the City of Sydney...
