James Heron b circa 1816 Blairgowrie
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 16:13 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody assist in my research for James Heron B crica 1816 Blairgowrie pre 1851.
His wife was Janet Heron born circa 1813.
In 1851 he was head gardener at Snaigow Gardens Perthshire.
1881 census shows him as a farmer of 220 acres at Ninewells(?) employing 3 men.
He was still alive in 1901 shown as a crofter living Burnside Perthshire.

Any advice to go back beyond 1851 census most appreciated.

His family ended up in Renfrewshire at Pollock Gardens so thought there maybe a cross over.

Hi Pricey,

I'll move this topic to the Perthshire board for now (to save duplication), until you have more information.

Hi Pricey

Have you looked at James Heron's death certificate on Scotlands People as this should hopefully have his parents' names to let you confirm his family and work back.

There is this entry for example on IGI which fits well with his birth year in 1851 (born circa 1814):

JAMES HERON Birth: 10 SEP 1813/ Christening 12 SEP 1813 Blairgowrie, Perth
Parents:JOHN HERON and ELSPETH STEWART

I know he was still alive in the 1901 census still living in Perthshire.
Will that site have his wedding cert details re marriage to Janet so I can confirm his father`s name??
Thanks for the info

There is an entry showing on IGI for the banns or marriage:

JANET REID and JAMES HERON
Marriage: 06 NOV 1842 in Blairgowrie, Perth

Official registration began in Scotland in 1855 so the above entry (available to view on Scotlands People) will be an entry on the Old Parish Register. These OPR entries are quite hit and miss on how little info they contain. You may find no more that a single line entry as above.

I think your best option would be to start by looking at the death certificate image on line at Scotlands People which should include full details on parents' names, including mother's maiden name and details of spouse - if known to the informant.

To search for Janet Reid is slightly easier as you can search with both her married name and maiden name to narrow down search results.

If you have followed them on the censuses, you should hopefully see their death entries relatively easily on the search results.
