Many thanks Shane, I don't have any further information than what is on his convict record when arriving in Tasmania in 1842.  His brother Francis I know even less about, except when Hugh Gaffney was 27, Francis was 19 Transported for the same crime, that of stealing arms.

My reply in post No 6 has as much as I know about the Gaffney brothers.

1814 is correct as it tallies with the trial date and age.  I registered on the Irish Roots Web Site and there appears to be only one Frances Gaffney for 1822 plus/minus 3 years.  Born in Co. Limerick. NOW ....... that is a pay site!!!!!

I really appreciate your time and effort.

Cheers, Kevin

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=420496

has some new information.

The Tasmanian convict records shows Hugh & Francis Gafney's father's name was James, and his mother was Catherine, with brother Michael at home, and sisters Rose, Ann, Mary, Biddy.  Either Gafney or Gaffney.

I cannot afford 5 Euro   >:(  for one search, but this further information might help someone find the family in Ireland.

Cheers, Kevin

I checked the IFHF index for that 1813 Co. Cavan baptism of a Hugh I mentioned earlier and unfortunately the father's name is not James.

Thanks Shane for your assistance.  :)

On the IFHS there is a baptism for a Hugh Gafney (one'F') in Co. Cavan for 1814.

Is this the one you checked?

the baptism I checked was 1814, and I took a few guesses at the father's name and got a match when I tried Patrick. it's the only Hugh Gaffney (with either one of two Fs) listed on the IFHF anywhere near to the correct year in Co. Cavan.

This could mean that Hugh's baptism records has not survived, has not been transcribed by the IFHF or that he was born somewhere other than Co. Cavan.

Many thanks Shane, back to the drawing board.  I might have to shelve this one in the "Brick Wall" category.   :'(
