Havannah Farm corbetts
« on: Saturday 28 November 09 14:55 GMT (UK) »
I have ancestors of mine called the Corbetts who resided at a place in Springwell Chester-le-Street called Havannah Farm from 1871-1881.I wanted to know more about Havannah Farm itself.

Many Thanks if anyone can shed more light on it.

David

Havannah is still marked on the modern map, it appears to be a farm. It is
on the B1288 near its junction with the A194(M) Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and enter the post code NE97YT, in search.

I believe the old farm is now a market garden business, Havannah Nursery. It was originally part of Usworth Fell and property of Lord Ravensworth. Probably the name means that it was an enclosure about 1762 commemorating the capture of Havannah Cuba by a British amphibious force.

Hi David,
My mum was a Corbett and our family owned Havannah Farm. Who are your ancestors we may have information on them for you.
We can send you pictures of the area too if you want.
My great grandfather was born on the farm.
My Aunt can tell you more.
Regards
Sarah
