Hi,

Searching for John Rose, born in Guernsey approx 1839, father Jeremiah Rose, mother Jane (Cox).  He is listed in the 1841 Channel Is. census but can't find him after that.  Mother and father came to Australia in 1854. Possibly he died.  Could someone help please??
Cheers

I wonder if the problem lies with the 1851 entry?

The 1841 entry shows John as aged 2yrs and no other children after him

In 1851 Jeremiah and Jane have a daughter Jane aged 12 b 1839 - born coincidentally the same year as John but who does not show in 1841

Thanks,  looks like Jane (1851)census could be John.  The family sailed on "Evening Star" from Jersey in 1854.  I haven't been able to locate a passenger list to see if John was with his mother and father. Is there anyway a list can be obtained?
Regards,

Just a thought to bear in mind

In the Channel Islands at that time most children were given French names which were sometimes anglicized on the later censuses, sometimes not, hence John would have been Jean, often mistaken for a female by transcribers.
