I agree with nearly everything you've written - have added a couple of other bits in blue.  Trying to think of some cattle descriptors which could be the missing words in the first sentance or two!  Spelling is atroucious, attroceous, atr.... horrid!!

Thankyou Ermy,

It is comforting to know that I was applying http://www.scottishhandwriting.com/1hour.asp correctly.

The phonetic spelling of words, that are no longer common, seem to have been (and may continue to be) my main problem.

Does anyone know what a “horse kine” is? Could it be an ox?

Hmmmm, googled it and found a few other references to horse kine in various wills/inventories of about the same period.  One suggestion given that it was a mule http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcwhorter/in_search_of_john_mcwhorter.htm - but I wonder if it means hornless cattle (i.e. hornless like a horse) as most cows/oxen would have had horns in those days??

I have not been able to find anything that defines a “horse kine”. I would guess that it was an animal to pull his cart or plow. Other references on the internet firmly indicate that it is a type of animal, grouped with other domestic farm animals.

In the first line of this text, “bryndyde steare” logically would more likely be Brindled. This Will uses colour frequently, including "Bay mare" & "Bay colt" etc, in lines not posted here.

The 2nd line – “A blacke ?....d? heacfor (i.e. heifer)” looks to me like “A blacke ?.Rowgyd? heacfor (i.e. heifer)”. What do you think?

The last two lines;
seconde best panne Allso I bequeathe to Thomas AVELYNE my sonne ?.xeynly?
?iiij.? (4?) callffs Allso I bequeathe to Wyllm AVELYNE A weynlynge calffe And to Ellyne

I have no idea what a “second best panne” could refer to.
I am still at a loss as to what Thomas AVELYNE was to inherit?

I have no idea what a “second best panne” could refer to.

Pots and pans, brassware, iron and pewter utensils are often specifically mentioned in old wills, along with the best and second-best bedstead. The best bed often had a feather mattress; the second-best bed might only have had a chaff (straw) mattress.

"A bryndyde steare"

A branded steer?

Peter

Apologies - this has already been suggested!
