Peck's Fishpaste Factory, London
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 11:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me anything about the history of Peck's Fishpaste Factory, which was located somewhere in London?

I believe it was closed temporarily in WWII, due to an unexploded bomb, and subsequently relocated in Australia (Wiki).

Thank you.

'Hat.

This popped up from a Google search.

Might be worth looking in the 1901 census to see if he is shown as a Food manufacturer of sorts?

I worked for Melbray Foods as a Sales Representative in the late 60's. They had two main brands, Haywards who manufactured pickles, and Pecks who had two products, tinned tongues and pastes. The main shareholders were the Mainwaring family, if I remember rightly Stuart Mainwaring was the MD, and the factory was at the top of the Old Kent Road, South London. around 1970 the Mainwarings sold the business to PG the tea people. I know until recently Haywards was a Premier brand but I don't know what happened to Pecks. The Old Kent Road factory was a bit unique because the access was so close to the road they had a turntable to turn the trucks round.

Hello, Mikael,
My mother worked there prior to "joining up", for the ATS.
I was half hoping someone might have pictures from the time as her memory isn't so good - she worked there with several friends who all left around the time of the UXB.
Perhaps they thought they'd be safer in the army.............!
 ;)

"Harry Peck & Co" ran a competition in the 1952 newspapers where readers were invited to complete the second line of one of four rhymes. One example was "'Pass the Peck's Paste' said Peckish Polly" and the example 2nd line provided was "Nothing so good for making tea jolly".

Competitors were required to send their efforts to "Harry Peck & Co, Devonshire Grove, Old Kent Road, London S.E.15"

There was also an address in 1931 of "39a Snow Hill, London E.C.2"
