james nowlan of carlow
« on: Thursday 03 December 09 08:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anyone help me with JAMES NOWLAN, born Carlow in the 1810s.  He died in Carisbrook, Victoria, Australia in 1889 aged 77 but some of the maths don't add up.

On his death certificate his father's name is given as Patrick Nowlan (occ:farmer) and mother (christian name unknown) also quite clearly marked as maiden name: Nowlan, but this may be incorrect. However, he could have married his cousin!

I feel he may have been a convict as he spent 7 years in NSW before settling in Victoria. The little bells in my head ring merrily.

James wife - Mary McHale born county Mayo in c. 1832-  was one of the famine orphans sent to Victoria in 1848. I feel very proud to have one of these girls as my ancestor.

Hope someone out there can help!  Thanks in advance!
cheers,
Liz   :)

hi there
sorry i did not look in great detail, but try this site, they have parish records for carlow, not alot, but it may help.                                                http://www.igp-web.com/carlow/Records_index.htm
Nowlan/Nolan is a really common name around these parts of ireland.
I don't know if you've ever taken a look at this site either.
http://nolanfamilies.org/gallery/index.php
this has a list of 551 files of nolan graves in county carlow, maybe it might show a connection?
One thing you did not say was what part of carlow james was from, you may get a little more help if that was the case.
all the best

Hi Pete,

Thanks so much for all that info, I'll look more closely at it over the weekend.

James Nowlan clearly signed his name as NOWLAN on his marriage certificate, no X for his mark but his handwriting was very basic despite his age - 39.

On his death cert it says he was from Carlow, Co.Carlow, which narrows things down a little perhaps. However, I never trust what I read on these certs. Some of the officials were a bit lacking in accuracy.

Really appreciate your reply. All you rootschatters are so helpful!

Thanks, and hope we chat again.
all best, Liz

I have checked the voting registers from 1830's for you for Carlow. Here is what I found.

Philip Nowlan.. lives in Tallow Street, Carlow, at same address is
Miles Nowlan,
Con Nowlan,
James Nowlan.

There is another James Nowlan listed for Nursery-Ville.

Remainder of Nowlan's are

John Nowlan, Dublin Street
Matthew Nowlan, Dublin Road.
Peter Nowlan, Dublin Street. Looks like he also had a premises on Wellington street selling and excising spirits.

All above registered for the 31st Oct 1832.

Thanks
Ann Marie
