Swan Inn Winwick
« on: Saturday 12 December 09 18:52 GMT (UK) »

In 1881 ... one of my family was the innkeeper there !

I think it's still there ... I would appreciate any information about it if possible and of course I'd love a picture !!  ;)

I did Google but couldn't find one !

Hi,

Would this be the Swan Inn on Golborne Rd, Winwick.

If so just google Swan Inn Warrington. First one listed, scroll down, shows picture.

And states a little history, although it does say it wasn't built until 1888.

Possability?

Thanks Cancan !

I saw that page but didn't scroll down far enough !!  ::)

On 1881 census it says Swan Inn Winwick With Hulme, Lancashire ( Winwick Village )

So I think it must be the same one ... unless they built this one in place of it !  :)

Hi Annie,

Just got off phone!!

He has Sunday lunch there at least once a month,  He says he knows the place was  built in the 1880's but didn't know exact date.

He said there is a Museum in Warrington that maybe able to help or try the Warrington Guardian Newspaper as they have a page in the paper about the history of Warrington each week.  Also try the Warrington Library to see if they have anything.

I notice on the website there is a contact number, maybe a telephone call to them might throw up some more info!!

Have been invited to lunch at the Swan by my Uncle, in the New year, so will take some pics and try to get any info for you!!!

Sorry it's not more information fro you!!

Around 1880 for about thirty years the magistrates were trying to restrict the number of new licences which were being issued.  As a result quite a number of old pubs were moved to new premises retaining the original licence, or at least using the closing as a reason for having a new licence granted..

You may thus find the original Swan closed around that time.  If you have found it on the 1881 census then you should be able to locate it by following the enumerators walk because hopefully there will be other landmarks on that walk which can still be located.
