6th (Esher) Surrey Rifle Volunteers
« on: Sunday 13 December 09 17:21 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone out there discovered ancestors serving in the 6th (Esher) Surrey Rifle Volunteers? This Corps and its successors drew most of its membership from the parishes of Esher, Molesey, Thames Ditton, Long Ditton, Cobham, Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge, and Stoke D'Abernon.  Whilst retaining a degree of autonomy, they were amalgamated into the 2nd Surrey Administrative Battalion, which later became the 5th Surrey Volunteer Rifles. In 1908 Esher became the A Detachment of the 6th Battalion, the East Surrey Regiment.

I am pursuing an MPhil in Local History on the Esher Corps, and would be interested in talking with anyone who might be able to put 'flesh on the bones' of names in newspaper reports and Battalion Orders. Conversely, I might be able to provide information to others on their ancestors.

Season's greetings. Jon Moore
