Well done.......and that would change the Douch relatives to the ones who are currently living in Queanbeyan, ACT and Alberts Lake areas as the ones who might be related to this interestingly named man.

Also, if he was at Captain's Flat he may have been involved in mining as a labourer.....

"Carbine"... as a nick name...

Well found Judith...  :)

I thought "Carbine" was a famous horse from a much earlier era than Phar Lap...  So, I've been checking and Yes... Carbine was famous....  Perhaps Mr Douch's nickname may indicate he was associating with horse racing/ breeding...

http://www.barnesphotography.com.au/carbine/index.htm

Or perhaps Carbine Douch was the life of any party .....  "All items on display at the new Champions Australian Racing Museum come with a story. Carbine, the horse that won the 1890 Melbourne Cup, was apparently a bit of a show-off and loved to stop and preen for the crowds"  (from part of a paragraph at http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/06/30/1088488013333.html )

Cheers,

JM

Sydney Morning Herald, Wed, Jan 8 1975

Death Notices
DOUCH. Bruce Alexander. (Carbine).  January 6, 1975, late of the Captain's Flat Hotel, loved husband of Rene, father and father-in-law of Raymond, John and June, Barry and Noeline, Kay and Les Manwaring.  Stepfather of Garry and Kerry.  Loved poppy of their children.

Funeral notice for the late Mr Bruce Alexander (Carbine) Douch of the Captain's Flat Hotel is from Christ Church Queanbeyan 11am Thursday 9 January, to Tharwa Road Lawn cemetery (it actually says Pharwa but that's not correct).  Undertakers: M H O'Rourke ( they are still in business)

The same death and funeral notices were in The Queanbeyan Age, January 8, 1975 which has an obituary for him.  If you PM me your email I'll send you a scan of it. This is the gist:
Publican of Captain's Flat Hotel,
well known in Queanbeyan as an enthusiastic race horse owner, member and supporter of thw Qbn Racing Club.
Trianed and raced his own horses throughout Sthn Tablelands, Monaro and Sth Coast.  Son Ray is a jockey in the area.

Cheers, Judith
