Rose SINNETT from Scotland
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 09:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
I'm trying to trace Rose Sinnett or her descendants in Australia.  Rose Sinnett was born around 1908 ( not Scotland perhaps in Ireland) she lived with her parents Stephen Sinnett and Mary Ann O'Rourke in the village of Calderbank Lanarkshire Scotland along with her siblings Ellen, John, Elizabeth and Stephen.  She emigrated to Australia around 1920 ish and married in Australia.
If any of this looks familiar please respond - thank you

Tom

Hi Jenn

Sorry, no other information.  I know its a long shot, but I thought that the "sinnett" surname might not be too common.  I'm helping Margaret Sinnett the niece of Rose Sinnett research her ancestry -  Margaret is the Daughter of Rose's brother Stephen.  Any help would be greatly appreciated Jenn.  Incidently I visit the Scottish records office every week and would be glad to do any look ups for you as a wee thank you.

Best Regards

Tom

thats nice of you Tom

there is a Rose Sinnett on  the electoral rolls in Victoria but I feel certain she is a married woman cause her death is to be seen and  her fathers name is not Sinnett.

Thanks for your messages Jenn and Annie

Annie - On the Melbourne arrival 1958, I think that might be a bit too late, but I'll check with my Sinnett contact in Scotland. Did it say place of origin for Rose May Sinnatt?

Jenn - Guess there must be a male Sinnett in Victoria.

I realise this is an old thread, but the information may be useful to someone else too.

Stephen Sinnett married Mary Ann O'Rourke in West Ham in the March Quarter of 1903.   All the children found for these parents were also born in the West Ham Registration district.

The family appears on the 1911 census, at 11 Hoy St, Tidal Basin E, Canning Town, West Ham, Essex, but without father Stephen.  Mother Mary Ann is stated as being married for 8 years, and having had four children born, all of whom were still living.  These four children were given as:  Ellen, aged 7, John aged 6, Mary T (wrongly indexed as Mary J) aged 4, and Eliza aged 1.  Ellen O'Rourke aged 72, widow, was also living at the same address.  She is presumably Mary Ann's mother.  As father Stephen is believed to have been a merchant seaman, it is presumed he was away at sea at the time of the census.

Birth records have been found for Ellen (Sep Q 1903, West Ham), John (Sep Q 1904 West Ham) and Eliza Kathleen (Jun Q 1909 West Ham) as well as for the two children born after the 1911 census, Stephen (dec Q 1913 West Ham) and Julia (dec Q 1911 West Ham).

So from this, it looks like there was no daughter Rose (not on census, and not having died before census 1911, and no birth record), but there is something funny about Mary T (on census 1911 aged 7, but no birth record found).   What I am wondering is whether Mary T was known by one or more different names, and this is the person the enquirer knows as "Rose".  The age is certainly about right.

I'm more than happy to look into this further as part of the Sennett/Sinnott/Sinnett one name study, so feel free to contact me by PM or through the one-name study (registered with www.one-name.org)
