Death registration on Jersey - completed
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 20:35 GMT (UK) »
My 2x great grandfather was last shown collecting his army pension in Jersey in 1867 and then his date of death is recorded as 30th June 1871.   Since he collected his pension all over the place prior to 1867 it seems odd that nowhere else is recorded between 1867 and his death unless he remained in Jersey.   All the same I can't find him, his wife Jane or their family in the 1871 census - anywhere!

If there is an index of death registrations for Jersey I would be extremely grateful if some kind soul would check it for me.   If he isn't there at least it's one less place to look!   His name was Patrick CAUGHLIN/COUGHLAN.

Many thanks,

Diana

Hi Diana

I can see a death in St Helier, Feb 1871 to Apr 1872, volume 22, page 28 for a Patrick Coughlan.

Someone has transcribed the gravestones for Almorah Cemetry, St Helier and there is and entry for a Patrick Couglan (no H). It says - died ? May 1871, buried 1st Jun 1871. Could this be your man?

Incidentlay have you a James in the family?

Stewart

Hi Stewart

Thank you so much for checking that for me.   It sounds very much like it is him even though the dates don't quite match.   It sounds as if I will need to get a death certificate to make sure.   Do you know how I go about it and will the information you have given me be enough?

You asked if there was a James in the family.   Yes, Patrick and Jane had a son called James who was born in 1845.   Is his death recorded too?

One last question.   If I was to visit Jersey and visit the cemetery is the grave still there?

Thank you so much for your information.   I can't tell you how grateful I am.

Regards,

Diana

Hi Diana

I've replied by PM re the James question.

Almorah Cemetery still exists although somewhat overcrowded with gravestones. However, there is a map!

Certificates are available at £20 each from:

The Superintendent Registrar,
10 Royal Square,
St. Helier,
Jersey JE2 4WA

Following Stewart's sterling work on my behalf I now have Patrick's death certificate.   It isn't the end of the story as it was an accidental death, so more digging required!

Hi,
I sent some info to you this morning as I`m new on here and dont know how to do PM`s, My name is Peter Caughlin and I live in Dorset, Patrick Caughlin is my great grandfather, I have a copy of his marriage certificate to Jane Muzzell who was a local girl who lived in Dorchester, they were married in Fordington Church, the street where she lived is still there but the houses have been replaced  by other buildings, Patrick was a Crimean War veteran and the reason he was in Jersey was he reinlisted, on his military records it states that he was "killed in Jersey",I have visited the cemetery and there are 2 vertical gravestones with no discernable writing on so they don`t know which grave is his, I have a lot of info on the family which I can share with youkk
