Who was L. James of St Clears, etc?

For years I have had a horse brass [remember them?] which is heart-shaped, and inscribed:

L. JAMES
ST. CLEARS
LLANBOIDY
WHITLAND
KIDWELLY

I have no connection with Carmarthenshire but have often wondered who L. James was, and what business he had.  There is no date on the brass, but it looks as though it is from the age of the horse and not a modern re-strike.
Can anyone help?[/pre]
