Emigration to America
« on: Wednesday 23 December 09 13:29 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me the best site for emigration to America?

I am trying to find out when my 3x great grandfather John Charlesworth went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

All I know for sure is that he married Mary Hoadley there on 31 July 1842 and their first two daughters were born there in 1844 and 1846. The family were back in England by the 1851 census where they had a further four children including my 2x great grandmother Eliza.

If you would like to view the 1840 and 1850 US censuses for the Charlesworth family go to www.linktothepast.com a very good site for Wisconsin genealogy. I found it on Google.

I forgot to say that I have the family on the UK 1851.

I think I also found John Charlesworth in 1841.

So it looks like they went to America after the 1841 census and were back in time for the next one.

I've had this question on another website but I wasn't getting much help with it so I thought I'd try here :)

So very very sorry Gibby. I Googled 1840 Milwaukee Wisconsin census and the site I  choose was just great, the address I sent you was in the address box, I saw no need to question it. I just now entered it and was shocked to see what came up!!! Again sorry, but try Google yourself. The US censuses are taken on the even numbers so try for the 1840 and 1850 since they were still here. Would love to know how you make out.
Merry Christmas,

Hi Gibby

Did Mary emigrate with him?

It is amazing how many of us Brits have a direct ancestor who spent time in America or Australia either for just a few years or forever if they were widowed and went to join their other children out there.

Unfortunately I don't know whether she went with him or her own family.

I do know that Mary was born in Barnsley as was John.

I'd really like to find out why they went in the first place and what made them come back.

I know very little about this side of the family.
