Homes/hospitals
« on: Wednesday 23 December 09 16:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I was kindly given the census information of my Grandmothers sisters whereabouts on the 1911 census.

She was Sarah Ann Chaney (1884) who spent her adult life in institutions.
From the 1911 census it says that she was an inmate at 112, Downs Park Road, Lower Clapton.

Does anybody know what this place was, all the  women on that page of the census were below 26,  mostly teenagers.

Were they pregnant, mentally ill, with learning disabilities?

Sarah Ann lived into the 1950's still in a home so we are talking 50 + years and I would very much like to try and track this poor woman's dreadful existence.

Thanks,
Martin

Thank you for that,

I'll email Hackney library, they might have some information and maybe Barnardo's  and local NHS Trust's.
The Feeble Minded bit could have a meaning which includes theft & prostitution apparently.

Dr. Barnardo's Homes started a Home for Deaf, Dumb, and Blind at Downs Park Road, Clapton, E. (In 1930 there were about 20 inmates, including 3 blind women.)

 - although this seems to have been at "77" Downs Park Road.

Looking at www.historicaldirectories.org , there seems to have been a Joseph Nathan who was at 112 over this period (including listed there in 1911), no trace of any institution at that location during the same time.  Have you seen the image of the 1911 census info? Does it absolutely certainly say "112" as the address? Or could it possibly be that the women staying at 112 during the 1911 were linked to the Barnados home somehow?

Hello,
I haven't seen the image of the census - just given the details on it. I'll ask the Roots Member to send it to me to check.

She was 26 in 1911 would Barnardo's have girls of that age in their homes?
Thanks,
Martin
