So, is the Joseph Brewin, hosier, who marries Ann Turner of Worsbro' Bridge on 3 January 1836 at Sheffield Cathedral, the son of Joseph and Ruth?

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

There is an announcement on 9th January 1836 in The Sheffield Independent which states that Joseph Turnell, Hosier, married Ann Turner of Worsbro' Bridge.

There are other records of a Joseph Turnell, a relieving officer in Sheffield.

The Relieving Officer with wife, Annie, was born in Leicester in 1815 - 1851 census.

The death notice for Ruth states 'on 12th inst., at Scarborough, Ruth, widow of Mr. Joseph Turnell, hosier, age, 68 years.

I can't find Joseph and Annie on the 1841 census either, so perhaps some records are missing.

Joseph Turnell, widower of Ann, married again on 16th March 1857 in Sheffield, to Charlotte Fishbourne. He was a licenced victualler, son of Joseph, a Hosier.

Thank you BumbleB and DCB, your replies are much appreciated.
Responding in order:
- Yes I had found Ruth but Joseph snr obviously dies between 1837 and 1851 and I'm suspecting between 1837 and 1840 prior to daughters Ruth and Martha emigrating to NZ.
- Yes that will be the eldest of the four sons (Joseph, Isaac, John and Thomas). But I didn't have his middle name which matches the naming of the younger two children (Martha Brewin Turnell - my 2ggm and Thomas Brewin Turnell). I had Ann but not her surname.
- I have Joseph jnr & Ann in the 1841C in Watery St, North Sheffield and have tracked him in Census's up to an including 1871. But can't locate death for Joseph senior or 1841C for Joseph snr and Ruth.

The lack of death registration surprises me given post 1837.
Cheers

There is a will of Joseph Turnell, of Leicester, executor Ruth Turnell, late of Sheffield, in 1829, but I can't find a burial, unless mistranscibed - e.g. as Turner.

I think Ruth may be in St Thomas Street, Sheffield in 1841. She is independent with her age overwritten and could be 55, rather than 35.

The Joseph in the directories might be junior because he was also a hosier on his marriage record.

Leicester burial CD has Joseph Turnell aged 52 buried on 5 Dec 1828 at Harvey Lane Baptist, Leicester
